Mushroom Hunting!
October 28, 2019
You HAVE to see the evolution of the seasons here.
It is so beautiful every day, even the foggy, grim ones. I have the most beautiful view of the garden and I love being able to put these photos side by side. The middle one is when the weather here when it's foggy... but the far left is the beautiful fall we're clinging onto as November looms.
The great thing about foggy and rainy weather... is apparently it makes it prime time to collect mushrooms in the forest!
A friend of the family went collecting and brought us some. I had a great night with my family here learning the differences between them and cleaning them off to be eaten.

Elena's grandfather was a very dedicated mushroom hunter, so both she and her mother grew up learning all about how to find safely edible mushrooms. Having the mushrooms here set off the gene in Elena to find her own, so when we had some free time on Monday we set off into the forest. It was the most beautiful sight. So calm and quiet and strong.
I was in a lot of pain all day and honestly didn't want to do anything, but it was also a level of pain where rest is not an option. I took a bunch of medications but that barely made the pain tolerable. I needed a distraction. This opportunity came up and I seized it. If there's one thing I've learned over the last four years, it's that spontaneity is key. For every bad day, there is a worse one waiting around the corner. You obviously know your limits and days you can't leave the house. But you also know that if you don't push and test your limits, they will become more and more constrained. So spontaneity it was!

Picking mushrooms in a forest, with my basket and little knife, honestly felt like being in a fairytale. It was such a cool experience and one I hope to have again while I'm here!
